Outdoor Exercise Tips

Spots in Indy Where You Can Get a Workout

When the gym is closed, and team sports are indefinitely on hold, you can still get a good workout by taking advantage of downtown-area destinations. Miles of trails wind through the Indianapolis, giving runners, walkers, and cyclists options for exercise.

Unfamiliar with the area near River West Flats? Here’s what you need to know:

White River Trails

From River West Flats, you can easily access the White River Wapahani Trail, which runs north to 38th Street and south to Raymond Street. The section of this trail south of The Indianapolis Zoo is mostly shaded, while the northern part of the trail offers great views of the river. You can also take this trail into the city to connect with the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.

A Ready-Made Step Workout

Looking for a supercharged cardio workout? Take a brisk warm-up walk to the Indiana World War Memorial, a few blocks east of IUPUI. This building has numerous broad concrete stairs on all four sides – run up and down the stairs to build muscle and endurance, all while maintaining a safe distance from others.

Make Use of Green Space

Are you and your roommate looking to get outside for some exercise? Grab a Frisbee and head to White River State Park or the wide-open area behind River West Flats. As you’re tossing the Frisbee back and forth, you may not even realize how much you’re running!

Get Creative

Walking or running up a hill is a good workout. We don’t have many hills in Central Indiana, of course, but along the Central Canal Walk, there are natural slopes along with steep staircases that could be part of your workout plan.
