Markets, concerts, festivals and fun on the White River

Downtown Indianapolis near the White River is a terrific place to be when the weather is warm. If you live at the River West Flats in downtown Indy, you’re lucky enough to be close to all the action and come home to a freshly remodeled apartment overlooking the river or the city. Here are just a few ways you can enjoy Indianapolis this spring and summer. 

Summer Concerts at White River State Park

The TCU Amphitheater at White River State Park has a terrific lineup of concerts all summer long, so you’re sure to find something you love. Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, Jackson Browne, Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Sheryl Crow are just somes of the big names you’ll find at this lovely outdoor venue this summer. 

The Urban Market

Taking place from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the first and third Sundays in June and July, this urban farmer’s market is returning this summer to the green space between the NCAA Hall of Champions and White River State Park Visitor Center, known as Celebration Plaza. Find all your favorite farm-fresh produce, foods and drinks, flowers, plants, and handcrafted goods here.

Animals and all that Jazz

This Thursday night concert series takes place at the Indianapolis Zoo June 16th through August 4th from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. under the Bicenntenial Pavilion, and it’s one of the Indy Zoo’s most popular events. You’ll find a diverse lineup of jazz musicians, special food and drinks, and animals on exhibit until 7 p.m. 

Wheel Fun Rentals on the Canal

Explore the city and get in some physical activity by renting a Surrey, city bike, electric bike, chopper, quad sport, or deuce coupe. If you’d rather explore the city by water, try out a swan pedal boat or kayak!

Indianapolis Summer Farmer’s Market

Here’s another chance to take advantage of a fresh, local summer market in Indianapolis. You can find it Wednesdays at 727 N. Oriental Street from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 2236 E. 10th Street from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., from May through October. 

Indy Strawberry Fest 

Enjoy strawberries, ice cream, and homemade shortcakes at the 56th annual strawberry festival, returning to Monument Circle this year on June 9th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Madam Walker Legacy Center Grand Reopening and Juneteenth Celebration

This June 17th gala will kick off the grand reopening of this historic Indianapolis theater hosting concerts, comedy shows, art exhibits, lectures, and film screenings. The celebration will also featuring a music festival in Military Park with a variety of local and national acts.

Thursdays on the Mall

The Indiana War Memorials Foundation hosts free movies in ‘Indy’s backyard’ on the first Thursdays in June, July, and August, with food trucks, drinks, games, and more. The Mall is located at 700 N. Pennsylvania Street from St. Clair Street to North Street between Meridian and Pennsylvania.

Concerts on the Canal

The Indiana Historical Society hosts Concerts on the Canal on Thursdays in June and July. Concerts begin at 6 p.m. and admission to the history center is free on Thursdays during the concert season. Reserve a table on the terrace or bring your own chair or blanket and sit on the grassy areas along the Central Canal. See the historical society’s website for pricing on table reservations.

Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field

The Indians are the Indianapolis minor league team and home games take place at Victory Field from now through September. There are afternoon and evening games, and themed events for all ages. You can’t beat a Victory Dog and a Helmet Sundae on a hot day!
