If you live at River West Flats apartments near IUPUI and the White River, you’re lucky enough to be near so much of the art and culture of downtown Indianapolis. These venues even make a great Valentine’s Day date! Here are just a few of the museums that are just a short walk or drive from River West.
Museums
Indiana State Museum
Explore Indiana’s cultural and social history as well as its geological and natural history through a wide range of exhibits. It’s just 2.5 miles from River West Flats. Drive there in under 10 minutes or take a walk along the White River Trail across the pedestrian bridge.
Eiteljorg Museum
Check out the current exhibits, Contemporary Native Art 101 and Snow Days, and explore the permanent exhibits dedicated to the art and culture of the American West and Native people.
NCAA Hall of Champions
The place for sports fans! The NCAA Hall of Champions is just two miles from River West Flats. You can even walk there on the White River Trail! Admission is just $5 for adults and $3 for children and seniors. Winter hours (January and February) are 1 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Indiana War Memorial & Museum
Start at the Indiana War Memorial and Museum open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and then you can take a walking tour of all the monuments from the American Legion Mall to the USS Indianapolis CA 35 Memorial. Head to Military Park by way of the Cultural Trail or the Central Canal Walk and back around to the Soldiers and Sailors Monument.

Newfields
The Lume exhibit currently showing at Newfields features “Monet and Friends Alive” with 30,000 square feet dedicated to an immersive and multi-sensory experience transporting you to 19th Century Paris. Buy tickets online for you and your Valentine's Day date!
City Gallery
Located at the Harrison Center for the Arts, this venue is dedicated to showing the work of local artists and photographers. With a focus on contemporary art, the City Gallery offers a unique look at the culture and history of Indianapolis.
Gallery Forty Two
Housed in Indy’s oldest surviving commercial building, Gallery Forty Two is home to a variety of contemporary art, and the second-floor gallery showcases more modern themes of athletics and popular culture.
Gallery 924
Housed inside the Arts Council of Indianapolis, Gallery 924 is one of Indy’s newest and most popular experiences and features a different show opening on the first Friday of every month.
Indianapolis Artsgarden
As one of the few public and free spaces, the glass-domed structure located in the heart of downtown, the Artsgarden showcases both visual and performing arts and features a new Indy-based artist each month.
Athenaeum ArtSpace
The Athenaeum ArtSpace is an art gallery and cultural center located in the second-floor lobby of the Athenaeum Theatre on Mass Ave. It is a nonprofit effort dedicated to promoting Indy’s contemporary artists. It features monthly rotating exhibits and also offers educational opportunities like artist talks, tours, and workshops.
