Bicycle Commuting in Downtown Indianapolis

Tips for Getting Around

If you work in downtown Indy, the cost of parking can take a big bite out of your monthly budget. That’s one reason why many Indianapolis residents prefer bicycle commuting to driving.

Living at River West Flats apartments makes it easy to bike to your downtown office, to IUPUI, or to the grocery store. New to the world of bicycle commuting? Check out these tips:

Wear a Helmet

Even the most experienced cyclist should wear a helmet when riding in the city. Look for a helmet with MIPS (multi-directional impact protection system) technology.

Be Visible

When riding at dawn, dusk, nighttime, or when the sun is creating a glare off the pavement, a headlight and small flashing tail light will make your bicycle more visible to motorists. Some cyclists also wear a high-visibility reflective vest when riding.

Stay Aware

Look around when riding, especially when crossing in front of entrances to parking garages and alleyways. If a vehicle is idling and poised to enter the roadway, make eye contact with the driver to ensure they see you. Be especially alert at intersections.

Lock it Up

The best way to secure your bike when it’s outside is to use a U-shaped lock and a chain lock. Find a bike rack (or another object that can’t be easily lifted or sawed through) and put the U-lock around your frame and through the back tire, then attach it to the rack. Thread the chain lock through the U-lock and front tire.

Get a Basket

If you plan to get carryout meals or groceries, you’ll want a bike basket or rack to hold those items. And if you’ll be commuting to IUPUI, a bike rack can also hold textbooks, so you don’t have to carry them on your back while riding.

Get a Tune-Up

Avoid potential breakdowns – take your bike to a professional once a year for an inspection and tune-up. The Indianapolis City Market has a bike shop, and it’s just a 20-minute ride from River West Flats.
